Monica Mody was born in Ranchi and lives in San Francisco.

Monica received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame, where she won the postgraduate Sparks Prize Fellowship in 2010. She has also received Naropa University's Zora Neale Hurston Scholarship and the Toto Funds the Arts Award for Creative Writing. 

Through 2007-08, Monica curated Open Baithak, a multilingual poetry in performance series in Delhi. Her poetry and cross-genre experiments have appeared in three chapbooks and several lit journals. Her first book, KALA PANI, just came out from 1913 Press.

She holds a Bachelors in Arts and Laws from the National Law School of India University, and is currently a doctoral student in East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

She has worked with the global human rights organization Breakthrough on their program areas and as a film festival coordinator, and with the Centre for Feminist Legal Research. Her engagement with social justice and feminist/queer issues draws on her citizen/alien selves as much as on her evolving ideas of spiritual participation.
